RANDOM INTERNET is based on image material from so-called image boards – these are internet forums in which users remain anonymous and upload images, videos and gifs that would be immediately deleted on mainstream platforms such as Instagram, Facebook or Youtube because of their racist, sexist or otherwise offensive or inhumane content.
The video work, in which these images are played in quick succession, becomes a journey into the abyss of the Internet, in which our society is reflected in an oppressively bizarre way.
The image level is contrasted with a musical composition by the Cologne based experimental musician Matthias Muche, in which the ringing of church bells, accompanied by Muche’s trombone, is repeatedly synchronized with the rhythm of the sequence of images and then diverges again.
Random Internet was created as part of the German program “Neustart Kultur” in 2021/22.
RANDOM INTERNET basiert auf Bildmaterial von sog. Image-Boards – das sind Internet-Foren, in denen die Nutzer anonym bleiben und Bilder, Videos und Gifs hochladen, die auf Mainstream-Plattformen wie Instagram, Facebook oder Youtube wegen ihres rassistischen, sexistischen oder anderweitig anstößigen oder menschenverachtenden Inhalts in der Regel sofort gelöscht würden.
Die Videoarbeit, in der diese Bilder in schneller Folge hintereinander abgespielt werden, wird so zu einer Reise in die Abgründe des Internets, in denen sich unsere Gesellschaft auf beklemmend bizarre Weise widerspiegelt.
Der Bildebene wird eine musikalische Komposition des in Köln lebenden Experimentalmusiker Matthias Muche entgegengestellt, bei der das Geläut von Kirchenglocken, begleitet von Muches Posaune, sich immer wieder mit dem Rhythmus der Bilderfolge synchronisiert und dann wieder auseinanderläuft.
Random Internet ist im Rahmen des Bundesprogramms Neustart Kultur 2021/22 entstanden.
