An apartment in Dortmund‘s Westend. A chaotic room with a computer workstation, where the floor and all storage possibilities are covered with clothes, magazines, garbage and empty beverage cartons. Next to the keyboard is an overflowing ashtray, headphones are hanging on the edge of the table, and on the walls one sees a self designed Jamaican flag, a musical scale painted on the wallpaper and a picture of hip-hop idols.
In the room that has apparently been used as a music studio, four young men are hanging out, listening to music and talking. A self-recorded track with the line “If you’re a rapper like that – I gotta be scared of you…” is blasting out of the computer speakers.
The music changes and the guys start rapping to the instrumental beats now heard. Their own, partly spontaneously improvised texts talk about life on the streets, about crime, drugs, juvenile sentencing, and the dream to break out of this world.
The 16 minute short film offers an unfiltered, documentary view of the happening; it does not comment or judge. The recordings for Ganja originated within the framework of the RUHR.2010 project named „U-Westend”, initiated by the Museum Ostwall and the Technical University of Dortmund.

Eine Wohnung im Dortmunder Westend. Ein chaotisches Zimmer mit Computerarbeitsplatz, der Boden und sämtliche Ablagen sind übersäht von Kleidungsstücken, Zeitschriften, Müll und leeren Getränkekartons. Ein überquellender Aschenbecher steht neben der Tastatur, ein Kopfhörer hängt an der Tischkante, an den Wänden sind eine selbst gestaltete Jamaika-Flagge, eine auf die Tapete gemalte Tonleiter und ein Bild mit Idolen aus der HipHop-Welt zu sehen.
In dem offenbar als Musikstudio genutzten Raum halten sich vier junge Männer auf, hören Musik und unterhalten sich. Aus den Computerboxen tönt lautstark ein selbst aufgenommener Track mit der Zeile Bist du so ein Rapper – muss ich Angst vor dir haben…
Die Musik wechselt und die Jungs beginnen, zu den nun instrumentalen Beats zu rappen. In ihren selbst geschriebenen und teilweise spontan improvisierten Texten erzählen sie von einem Leben auf der Straße, das sich zwischen Kriminalität, Drogen, Gewalt, Jugendstrafe und dem Traum, aus dieser Welt auszubrechen abspielt.
Der 16minütige Kurzfilm zeigt einen rohen, dokumentarischen Blick auf das Geschehen, er kommentiert und wertet nicht. Die Aufnahmen zu Ganja sind im Rahmen des von Museum Ostwall und TU Dortmund initiierten RUHR.2010-Projektes „U-Westend“ entstanden.
